Who was Gerrit Greve?

Gerrit Greve was an internationally acclaimed fine artist who lived in Cardiff by the Sea, California. Raised in Indonesia and the Netherlands, Gerrit’s family immigrated to the U.S. in the late 1950s.  This multicultural exposure during his formative years informed many aspects of his work.

Working across styles and mediums, Gerrit produced thousands of paintings, drawings, and sculptures throughout his life. His artwork appeared in important public and private collections both in the U.S. and abroad. Since 1972, his work has appeared in numerous gallery and museum exhibitions, including a number of solo museum shows.

Gerrit was the subject of several television documentaries, including the Emmy Award-winning PBS series “Artists in Residence.” His paintings have been featured in many publications, including TIME Magazine. Notably, Gerrit’s painting Northwest Territory is included in the book “1001 Paintings You Must See before You Die.

Who are we?

Hi. We’re Jake, Jacqueline, and Katie. We’re Gerrit’s kids.

When Gerrit passed away after a battle with cancer in March of 2024, we inherited his prolific body of work. To honor Gerrit’s legacy and get his art into the hands of those who knew and appreciated him, we’ve begun to catalog and sell his artwork.

We often say that Dad was 100% artist. He loved experimenting with color, style, genre—you name it, he probably tried it. As we comb through his collections, we’re finding pieces—sometimes, entire series—that we didn’t know existed. And in the last few decades, he was in pure creation mode. He created so much that the world has yet to see.

So that’s why we’re here: to help people discover Gerrit’s art.
